General & Preventive Dentistry

Topeka’s Smiles Guaranteed

Today’s Dentistry is Topeka’s home for family dental care. We offer general and preventive dentistry services for everyone, starting at age 3. We focus on healthy habits and prevention, and we encourage you and your family to take an active role in your dental health.

Our general dentistry services help keep your teeth clean, reduce plaque and tartar build up, and keep your gums healthy. Plaque is a clear, sticky layer of bacteria that forms on your teeth, and can lead to a variety of dental issues, including gum disease. Adults over the age of 35 lose more teeth to gum disease than from cavities, so paying special attention to your gums is especially important at this stage. Brushing and flossing correctly can reduce the amount of plaque and debris on your teeth. Ask us if you have any questions about proper flossing or brushing techniques.

Preventive Care is Key for Good Oral Health

Developing good habits is key to a lifetime of excellent oral health. We’ll work with you to ensure you have a great smile that lasts for ages. By visiting the dentist regularly, we can monitor your oral health and detect any issues early. That means we can combat problems before they require larger, more complicated treatments.

From comprehensive exams, with oral cancer screenings and x-rays, to fluoride treatments and soft tissue lasers for frenectomies, we’ve covered all the bases with our general dentistry services. Whatever you need to get the best smile, Today’s Dentistry of Topeka is prepared. Let us uncover your dazzling, sparkling smile.

In order to determine exactly what issues may be present in your current state, we need to evaluate your teeth and gums. Our comprehensive exams include x-rays and oral cancer screenings, and we use them to formulate a treatment plan. We complete comprehensive exams for all new patients, including those who haven’t been seen for three years or more. All existing patients receive a comprehensive exam approximately every five years.

Everyone should be screened for oral cancer, as early detection of the disease can be lifesaving. Tobacco and alcohol use increase the risk for oral cancer, though anyone, even those who abstain from tobacco and alcohol products, can develop the disease. We use visual and manual screening methods to search for any abnormal tissues in your head and neck, gums, cheeks, and other areas of your mouth.

Our digital x-rays produce high-resolution images that give us a great look at what’s happening below the surface of your mouth. We can diagnose issues with your jaw bone, and check the roots of your teeth for any problems. We use panoramic x-rays which give use a full view of your entire mouth.

Developing healthy habits is essential to a beautiful smile. We’ll discuss your daily routine, and deep clean your teeth to eliminate plaque and tartar build-up. We use Cavitron magnetoscritive scalers to remove debris, along with Prophy Jet Air Polishing, which removes stains more efficiently than conventional polishing. We’ll leave your mouth feeling clean, refreshed, and sparkling.

Taking care of your gums is just as important as maintaining the health of your teeth. Periodontal disease is a contributing factor in adult tooth loss, so it’s important to have a regular perio exam. If you suffer from periodontitis, swollen, bleeding, or receding gums, we’ll prescribe Arestin, an antibiotic treatment, which will combat the plaque causing bacteria that causes periodontal disease. We recommend thorough flossing and brushing, along with routine hygiene dental visits to prevent gum disease.

Fluoride is vital to prevent tooth decay and restore important minerals to your tooth enamel. We use a fluoride varnish, which is a highly concentrated form of fluoride, applied topically to the teeth. It is painted onto the tooth enamel, which eliminates swallowing of any excess. It adheres to the teeth for several hours, which provides maximum benefit. We recommend fluoride treatments for children at every visit, as well as adults. Fluoride can desensitize teeth, helping those who suffer from pain when eating or drinking hot or cold items. Adults should have fluoride treatments every time they visit, but ultimately the choice is up to you.

Whether your children play sports, or you’re concerned about excessive wear, protect teeth with a custom-fit mouthguard. We offer mouthguards for your superstar athlete-in-training, to keep developing teeth safe during activity. Adults who suffer from night time grinding, known as bruxism, can wear a mouthguard while they sleep to prevent damage to their teeth. Ask us if mouthguards are right for you.

We understand that dental emergencies happen. From a toothache, to a lost filling, or even a broken dental appliance, contact us immediately. We try to see all our existing patients with tooth pain or other emergencies the same day, and patients can call after hours.
